“Braille” by Regina Spektor (On her album 11:11)

Okay, I should explain this song first.

I call it a catharsis song.

While I’m listening to it, all I want to do is find a corner, curl up, and cry my bloody heart out; but after it’s all over, I feel relieved almost. It makes me feel so much better. Crying it out, I suppose I am.

They made it past the enemy lines just to be enslaved by the assembly lines

“Blue Lips” by Regina Spektor

First there’s lights out, then there’s lock up
Masterpieces serving maximum sentences
It’s their own fault for being timeless
There’s a price to pay, and a consequence
All the galleries and museums
“Here’s your ticket, welcome to the tombs”
They’re just public mausoleums—
The living dead fill every room
But the most special are the most lonely
God, I pity the violins
In glass coffins, they keep coughin’
They’ve forgotten, forgotten how to sing

“All the Rowboats” by Regina Spektor

Why are you so scared?
You stand their shaking in your pew.
The icons are whispering to you.
They’re just old men
Like on the benches on the park
Except their balding spots are glistening with gold

“Human of the Year” by Regina Spektor

We counted up our feelings and divided them up even and called that calculation perfect love.

Didn’t even know that love was bigger

“The Calculation” by Regina Spektor

So we made the hard decision and each made an incision
Past our muscles and our bones
Saw our hearts as little stones.

Pulled them out, they weren’t beating
And we weren’t even bleeding
As we lay them on the granite countertop

We beat ‘em up against each other
We struck ‘em hard against each other
We struck ‘em so hard until they sparked

Regina Spektor (“The Calculation”)

I’ve got a perfect body,
But sometimes I forget.
I’ve got a perfect body,
‘Cuz my eyelashes catch my sweat

“Folding Chair” by Regina Spektor

No thank you, no thank you, no thank you, no thank you.
I ain’t about to pay for this shit.
I can afford chemo like I can afford a limo
And any given day, I’d rather ride a limousine

Regina Spektor—“Chemo Limo”

This is how it works
You’re young until you’re not
You love until you don’t
You try until you can’t
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath
